Gussets provided sufficient movement at the shoulders and underarms. Excess width was gathered along the neckline and sleeves. Nearly nothing of a shirt was visible underneath a high-necked waistcoat, except from the jabot, made from fine fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augusta-auction.com\/search-past-sales?view=lot&amp;id=13410&amp;auction_file_id=29\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.augusta-auction.com\/auctions\/29\/100\/0100.2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"470\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Men\u00b4s Shirt with Jabot and high stand-up collar about 1800 \/<!--more--><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the transformation of fashion at the beginning of the century, the claims to a shirt changed. Waistcoats with a revers or without collar showed more of the shirts front. So from about 1820-30 this part of the shirt often was emphasized with a bib front. The bib front could have folds or pin-tucks, also lace insertions. At the end of the century bib fronts were heavily starched and made from up to four layers of fabric. &nbsp;The bib front shirts, made from fine linen or cotton, were worn for formal occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whitakerauction.smugmug.com\/Fall-2010-3\/Clothing\/ID-225\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Fall-2010-3\/Clothing\/ID-225\/i-xhwZ6GM\/0\/96e921a1\/L\/ID%20225%20%281%29-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"297\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shirt with bib front about 1840-60&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Simple shirts without a bib front, made from cotton fabric or flannel, were worn by workingmen.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.augusta-auction.com\/search-past-sales?view=lot&amp;id=4502&amp;auction_file_id=8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.augusta-auction.com\/auctions\/8\/281\/0281a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"287\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Simple cotton shirt 19th century<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Georgian and Regency shirts had high sewn-on standing collars, to reach out a cravat.&nbsp; Detachable collars appeared about 1820 and became very popular during the century. They were fixed to a shaped and narrow sewn-on collar with collar studs. Especially during the romantic period, from 1825-40, stiff stock collars were popular.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antiquedress.com\/item3453.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/antiquedress.com\/MENs\/MensStockCollarBlack.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"292\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stock collar, mid 19th century<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Georgian shirts had narrow cuffs, decorated with ruffles for formal occasions. Later shirts became different shaped sewn-on cuffs, depending on the use. Short cuffs for everyday life and hard work were buttoned overlapping. Long turn back cuffs for eveningwear or official occasions were buttoned in a \u201ckissing style\u201d with normal shirt buttons.
